A Non-Typical Contemporary Set

We built and set this home for architect Randolph D. Zelov, Jr. in Raleigh, North Carolina.  Mr. Zelov designed this ultra-contemporary home to be his own personal dwelling.

Having previous experience in modular building in his early years, he wanted a company that could build a "green" modular home with extreme angles, low pitched roofs for solar power, high tech wiring, broad window walls, prows, porches, geothermal HVAC, and many other non-standard features.

He needed a company that could deliver the home on budget and on time and be able to fit in with his general contractor's plan for the completion of the overall project.

We could fill that need and we did.  This project was out of the ordinary and was a lot of fun.  We built, delivered and set the home, then handed it off to his general contractor.  He had pre-built the basement while the home was under construction at the plant, and then finished all the site work after our set.

This home has a lot of special features including an three story exterior glass block stairwell, three car garage with office above, full length finished basement, custom kitchen cabinets with granite counter tops, an infinity pool and more.

Here is a picture of what his job site looked like when he was getting started.  He made a cut in the side of a hill and put down gravel to set his Superior Wall basement on.  Next is a shot of the modular units that were delivered to the site.  We parked them along his road and then took them up to the crane one box at a time.

Here we are lifting the first and then second box into position.  You can see the bump out on his basement which is for his glass block enclosed outside stairs.  We leave the cut unfilled when setting on Superior Walls until the home is fastened on top, then we backfill.

These pictures show the front prow of the living room being installed in the middle of the home and the dining room going in on the left.  The nose of the prow has a fireplace surrounded by window walls.

Here is the last box going by itself on top of the first floor.   It contains two bedrooms and an ajoining bath.  Can you see the angled sides of this house?  It makes for a very contemporary looking home.

Mr. Zelov used a variety of sidings on his home as you can see here.  These views walk around the right side of the house.

This side door has a little private porch right the Master Bedroom and Master Bath.  Then we walk around to the back of the house.  The middle picture shows the glass block enclosed outside stairwell which goes up to the second floor and down to the basement, not using any of the square footage inside the house for accessing each floor.  A covered breezeway connects the 3 car garage and office to the main home.

The glass stairwell also supports the 2nd floor porch.  Here are two pictures of the garage and office above the right side which matches the design of the house.

Now we come around to the back side of the office and garage and breezeway.  Then the backside of the home with all the windows facing the backyard and pool.

The pool is an infinity pool as you can see with no side.  The end of the home is a screened in porch overlooking the pool.

Now we have entered the back of the home through the breezyway door.  Turning right you look through the kitchen to the fireplace and big screen TV in the living room and the door that enters on to the porch overlooking the pool.  The architect is at the undermount sink explaining to me where this exotic granite countertop came from. (Some country I have never heard of.)  And behind him is the stove top and exposed vent.

Looking through the living room windows to the pool.  Then through the living room to the front of the house and sliding glass doors to yet another balcony.  There is a desk and cabinets to the right of the door for a family workspace.  On the wall between these windows is the fireplace, TV and bookshelves.

Turning left at the balcony in the front of the house is the formal dining room with direct access to the kitchen.  Through the dining room is the family room with vaulted ceilings matching the prow and the window wall surrounding the fireplace.

On the back wall of the family room is a recessed bar which can be closed off when not in use.  Looking back through the family room into the dining room you see all the windows in that room.  A guest bath with a sink designed by Mrs. Zelov using the same granite as the kitchen.

Continuing the circle is an inside look at the stairwell, then back to the kitchen with Mrs. Zelov, Debbie, and her general contractor.  In the corner of the kitchen is the double oven and the nook that she works at.  These pictures really don't show how beautifully she has appointed her home.
